A content management system (CMS) is a system used to organize and facilitate collaborative creation of documents and other content. CMS's allow end-users (typically authors of some sort) to provide new content in the form of articles. The articles are typically entered as plain text, perhaps with markup to indicate where other resources (such as pictures) should be placed. The system then uses rules to style the article, separating the display from the content, which has a number of advantages when trying to get many articles to conform to a consistent "look and feel". The system then adds the articles to a larger collection for publishing.
Content management has a few different purposes :?
a. To easily obtain, upload, and collaborate on data files within a company.
b. Communicate through an integrated messaging system.?
c. Present and manage content for publication on the internet.
Some of the potential uses for content management systems are Document sharing and management, Knowledge base management, Web content management (internet), Content management (file sharing and sorting) etc. At the company level, Content management systems (CMS) store and manage an organizations electronic document and Web content so that the employee of the company can reuse the information across different applications. The web published content can also be distributed to customers and business partners outside the organization. The core application of the CMS is to manage content during its entire lifecycle i.e. from creation through publishing. The content of the CMS can also be shared by e-commerce and customer relationship management systems (CRM). Web Publishing system enables you to establish a consistent look and feel throughout your site, but gives your non-technical content authors the power to publish and update their own content using simple, but powerful, browser-based tools. Some of the CMS systems integrate with content delivery applications to deliver the content via a web site.
