Winsock and SP2:

Winsock corruption being as common as it is. Microsoft included a fix in SP2 to make the job a whole lot easier.

  1. Go to Start, Run, Type in CMD and press enter.
  2. In the command line simply type in Netsh Winsock reset Catalog
  3. After you type the command press enter.
  4. Restart the computer and voila Winsock is Repaired.

Pre SP2:

Below is the fix for Windows XP pre SP2.Usually you will receive the error below, when attempting to release and renew an IP address. Other symptoms of Winsock Corruption are simply the inability to obtain a valid IP address.

An error occurred while renewing interface 'Internet': An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.
(Note the netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt command will not resolve Winsock corruption, only refreshes Tcp/ip this command is good when you can ping IP but not Domain.)

  1. Click Start, and go to run. In the dialog box type in REGEDIT . Now you will see the registry editor utility.
    Note: Before deleting any registry keys it may be a good idea to make a system Restore point.
  2. In the registry editor utility you must locate and Delete the following keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
  3. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion of each key, click Yes .Note: You do NOT need to reboot the machine at this stage.
  4. Reinstall TCP/IP:
    • Click Start, and select Control Panel. Make sure the Customer is looking at the Classic View of the Control Panel.
    • Double-Click on Network Connections . (If there are no network connections listed here then please see the alternate solution below.)
    • Right-Click on Local Area Connection , and then Left-Click on Properties . If the only connection is a dial-up connection then right-clickon that and choose Properties and then click the General tab.
    • Click Install , click Protocol , and then click Add .
    • Click Have Disk so you can type the path to the INF folder. In the dialog box type C:\Windows\inf and press Enter.
      Note: If the above path name doesn t work, type C:\WINNT\inf .
    • on the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) , then click OK.
  5. Alternate solution if there are no network connections listed.
    • Go to My Computer. Ensure that Display Hidden Files and Folders is switched on (Tools->Folder Options->View->Show Hidden Files and Folders). Then locate the file nettcpip.inf usually located in c:\windows\inf or c:\winnt\inf, right click and choose Install. It may seem like nothing happens. That is OK it is very fast.
  6. Restart the computer.
