Change the com port used by a modem in Windows XP

Sometimes, 3rd party hardware or software requires use of a specific com port that may conflict with the com port in use by the modem. Also, occasionally, some ISP software may only work with modems configured with specific com ports. In both these cases it may be necessary to reconfigure the modem to use a different com port.

Go to Control Panel and choose Phone and Modem Options. Select the Modems tab.

Highlight the modem and click Properties. Click the Advanced tab and click Advanced Port Settings.

The com port can be changed by selecting the desired value in the Com Port Number drop down list.
