Summary:

This article describes how to setup Port Forwarding on the Netgear Wireless G WGR614 router. Other Netgear routers may have the same screens. Port Forwarding would typically be used when setting up a VPN or configuring Remote Desktop for example. Note: it is usually a really good idea to setup the machine that is being forwarded to with a static ip address.

Resolution:

To login to the router, in Internet explorer, go to http://192.168.1.1. If that does not work try this address: www.routerlogin.net. If that does not work then try plugging the PC into the router using a wired connection. Finally, try resetting the router using the reset switch on the back or bottom of the router. Note, this will clear all router settings.

If the login works this screen will appear:

The login name is admin and the password is password.

This results in the screen:

Click on the Port Forwarding/Port Triggering option on the left of the screen. This will result in the following screen.

Check the Port Forwarding option at the top of the screen. This will result in this screen:

The service you require may be on the list of Service Names. If it is select that service and then enter the Server IP Address of the machine to which the requests should be forwarded. If the service is not on the list, then click on the Add Custom Service. This results in the screen

Fill in the details for Service Name, Starting Port, Ending Port and Server IP Address. For most services the Starting port and Ending port will be identical.

Microsoft Remote Desktop uses port 3389

Microsoft VPN uses port 1723 (PPTP) and port 47 (GRE)
