Summary:

This article describes how to setup encryption on the Belkin 54G Wireless router. Other Belkin routers may have the same screens. Note that as soon as you change the encryption settings on the router, all wireless PCs will no longer be able to connect to the router until their encryption settings match. Wired PCs will be unaffected. Further note that prior to configuring encryption you need to decide the kind of encryption to use. If you choose WPA-PSK then all NICS need to support this and all machines should be running XP service pack 2. Otherwise it would be a good idea to choose WEP.

Resolution:

To login to the router, in Internet explorer, go to http://192.168.2.1. If that does not work then try plugging the PC into the router using a wired connection. Finally, try resetting the router using the reset switch on the back or bottom of the router. Note, this will clear all router settings.

If the login works this screen will appear:

Leave the password blank and click Submit.

This results in the screen:

Click on Encryption in the Wireless section on the left. This displays a screen similar to this depending upon the type of encryption already configured.

To configure encryption, choose either 64-bit WEP, 128-bit WEP or WPA-PSK HOME (No Server) in the Security Mode field. Ignore other available options.

For 64-bit WEP:

Select 64-bit WEP in the Security Mode field. Ensure that Key 1 is selected. Enter a 5 character PassPhrase and click generate. Note down the value of key 1. This will be entered on all wireless machines on the network. Click Apply Changes.

For 128-bit WEP:

Select 128-bit WEP in the Security Mode field. The screen will look like this:

Enter a PassPhrase of up to 13 characters and click generate Note down the value of the key. This will be entered on all wireless machines on the network. Click Apply Changes.

For WPA-PSK:

Select WPA-PSK HOME (No Server) in the Security Mode field. The screen will look like this:

Select TKIP as the Encryption Technique. Enter the Pre-shared Key (PSK) up to 40 digits and click Apply Changes.
