How do I fix an "invalid system disk" error when booting Windows XP?.

Cause:

This can be caused by a corrupted master boot record on the boot partition of the hard drive. If the system boots fine with the OS CD in the drive then this is the case. It can also be caused by a non-bootable floppy disk being left in the floppy drive.

Resolution:

  1. First of all check for a floppy disk in the floppy drive - if one is there remove it.
  2. Otherwise boot from the OS CD.
  3. Select R for Recovery Console at the Welcome to Setup screen.
  4. If prompted for the version of Windows to login to, type 1 and Enter.
  5. Enter the Administrator password
  6. type fixmbr and Enter.
  7. type exit and Enter and remove the CD.
