Problem Description:

How to Backup Quicken Data File?

Resolution:

Quicken data files are stored with a .qdf extension. There may also be two other files with .qel and .qph extensions. The second two files contain online banking and tax profile information.Quicken backup files are stored with a .qdf extension if the file is a single file. If the backup is stored over multiple disks then the extension will be .qb1, .qb2, etc.

Quicken 2005 and later

  1. Choose File menu > Backup.
  2. In the Back up your current file or specify another file below field, make sure the file you want to back up is selected (the file you are currently using is selected by default). Click Browse if you want to back up a different data file.
  3. Select the Add date to file name check box to add today's date at the end of the file name. Note: This feature is only available in Quicken 2005 and later Quicken uses the date format YYYY/MM/DD. So Quicken displays a file named QDATA saved on February 18, 2006 as QDATA20060218. Intuit recommends adding the date to your back up file so you can easily identify when a back up was created.
  4. In the Where do you want to save your backup file area, click On my computer.
  5. In the Select the disk drive and path to the backup folder field, click Browse to select the backup location.
  6. Select or clear the Use Windows CD Writing Wizard check box as needed. If your operating system is not Windows XP, Quicken does not display this check box.
  7. Click OK to start the back up.
If the file is larger than the space available on the backup disk, Quicken displays the Not Enough Space dialog.
    1. Select Insert a disk with more space and then replace the original disk with one that has more available space and click OK. (Make sure the new disk has no other files on it so it will have the maximum amount of available space.) If it can, Quicken backs up the entire file on the new disk.
    2. Select Back up onto several disks and click OK. Quicken will ask for additional disks when the disk is out of space. Your Quicken file will be on multiple disks.
  8. Click OK when Quicken tells you that the backup is complete.
  9. Remove the backup drive or disk and store it in a safe place.
  10. To create a second backup, repeat steps 1 through 10.
