Summary:

In order to hibernate successfully, your computer must be ACPI compliant. This is generally determined by the BIOS. So if a computer is not ACPI compliant it can be made so by updating the BIOS. However, when Windows XP is loaded on a computer it checks to see if it is ACPI compliant and if not, loads a different version of the HAL (hardware abstraction layer). This means that, generally, to make hibernate work on a non-ACPI compliant system you will need to update the BIOS AND reinstall Windows.

Resolution:

If the computer supports hibernation there will be a Hibernate tab on the Power Options applet. Go to Start->Control Panel->Power Options.
