SUMMARY:

This is usually caused by 3rd party add-ons. These are additional components that are not part of the standard Internet Explorer.

SOLUTION:

The action to take depens upon whether the cu has service pack 2 installed or not.

Windows XP service pack 2.

  1. Go to Start->Control Panel and double click on Internet Options.
  2. Click on the Programs tab and then click on Manage Add-ons.
  3. Disable any add-on that you suspect might be causing the problem by highlighting the add-on and then clicking on Disable at the bottom of the screen.
  4. In extreme cases it may be necessary to disable all the non-Microsoft add-ons and then re-enable them until you find which add-on is causing the problem.
  5. If the add-on appears to be malicious try to remove it in the usual way.

Anything other than Windows XP service pack 2.

  1. Go to Start->Control Panel and double click on Internet Options.
  2. Click on the Advanced tab and then uncheck the option Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart).
  3. Click Apply and OK.
  4. Close all open windows and restart the system.
  5. Try opening Internet Explorer. If it works then try going on-line and download HijackThis from www.download.com and use that for removing any Internet Explorer add-ons.
  6. If the problem is caused by malware, try to remove in the usual way.
  7. When complete remember to go back to step 2 and re-enable the option that was unchecked.
