SUMMARY:
This is usually caused by 3rd party add-ons. These are additional components that are not part of the standard Internet Explorer.
SOLUTION:
The action to take depens upon whether the cu has service pack 2 installed or not.
Windows XP service pack 2.
- Go to Start->Control Panel and double click on Internet Options.
- Click on the Programs tab and then click on Manage Add-ons.
- Disable any add-on that you suspect might be causing the problem by highlighting the add-on and then clicking on Disable at the bottom of the screen.
- In extreme cases it may be necessary to disable all the non-Microsoft add-ons and then re-enable them until you find which add-on is causing the problem.
- If the add-on appears to be malicious try to remove it in the usual way.

Anything other than Windows XP service pack 2.
- Go to Start->Control Panel and double click on Internet Options.
- Click on the Advanced tab and then uncheck the option Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart).
- Click Apply and OK.
- Close all open windows and restart the system.
- Try opening Internet Explorer. If it works then try going on-line and download HijackThis from www.download.com and use that for removing any Internet Explorer add-ons.
- If the problem is caused by malware, try to remove in the usual way.
- When complete remember to go back to step 2 and re-enable the option that was unchecked.
