Summary:

NTFS is the native file system used by Windows XP. It has the advantages of better security protection and better performance over FAT32 drives. Converting a drive from FAT32 to NTFS is surprisingly easy under Windows XP. Note: The conversion is a one way process. There is no way within Windows XP to convert back from NTFS to FAT32.

Resolution:

  1. Go to Start->Run and type cmd and click OK.
  2. At the command prompt type convert c: /fs:ntfs (substitute an alternate drive letter if not converting the c partition)
  3. Respond with Y to any questions that the utility may ask.
  4. The system will shut down and reboot and the conversion will be complete.
