Summary:

The messenger service was originally intended as a way for system administrators to notify users of events affecting their systems. However, recently it has been exploited by advertisers as a way to pop-up adverts on people's computers. Generally, disabling the messenger service will cause no ill-effects and will make the computer more secure.

Note: the messenger service is not an instant messaging program and will not affect the functioning of these programs.

Resolution:

    1. Click Start->Control Panel.
    2. Double click Administrative Tools.
    3. Double click Services.
    4. Scroll down and highlight Messenger.
    5. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
    6. Click the Stop button.
    7. Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar.
    8. Click Ok.
