SYMPTOMS

When you use any of the following methods to open a new instance of Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or of Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the Status Bar may not appear in the new browser window:
  • Press CTRL + N on the keyboard.
  • Right-click a link, and then click Open in New Window.
  • Click File, and then click New Window

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, click Status Bar on the View menu. You may also be able to prevent this issue from occuring by turning on the Status bar for a Windows Explorer windows and then setting all the folders to match that folder's view settings. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open Internet Explorer, click View, and then click Status Bar.
  2. Right-click the Toolbar in Internet Explorer, and then click Lock the Toolbars.
  3. Hold down the CTRL key and click the Close button at the upper right corner to close Internet Explorer.
  4. Right-click Start, click Explore, click View, and then click Status Bar.
  5. Click Tools, click Folder Options, and then click View.
  6. Click the Apply to all folders button.

    Note Click OK to confirm that you want to set all the folders to match the current folder's view settings.
  7. Open Internet Explorer, right-click the Toolbar, and then click Lock the Toolbars.
  8. Hold down the CTRL key and click the Close button at the upper right corner to close Internet Explorer.
  9. Open Internet Explorer to any page, right-click a link, and then click Open in New Window

    The Status Bar should remain visible.

The Status bar setting is stored as a String value named Show_URLinStatusBar in the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
