How to enable Hyper-V in Windows 8

Overview:
  • Previousl, only available on servers, Hyper-V is now included with Windows 8
  • With Hyper-V you can run a VM just using software included in the box.
  • Windows Virtual PC and XP mode will not be supported in Windows 8.

Hyper-V:

  • Hyper-V is the Virtualization technology included in Windows 8.
  • Previously a server only product.
  • Hyper-V is an extraordinarily robust VM solution, and supports a board number of server and datacentre specific scenarios.
  • The mangement interface that is provided on Windows 8 is the same in our server operating systems.
  • Can make buliding and running VMs in Windows 8 a more complicated experience


Hardware requirement for Hyper-V:

  • Windows 8 Pro or Windows 8 Enterprise
  • 64-bit Operating System
  • Minimum of 4GB Ram.
  • The following feature must be enabled in BIOS:

    HAV

    DEP/NX

    SLAT

Note: You can use MSINFO32 to determine your if your CPU supports everything that is required to run Hyper-V.




Enable Hyper-V:

Step1: In the Turn Windows features on or off window, select Hyper-V, and the restart



Step2: After restarting you will see two tiles at the end of your Start Screen



Step 3: The work of Configuring, building, and running Virtual Machines happen through Hyper-V Manager.




Creating a Virtual Switch:

Before we create a virtual machine, we create a network for it to attach to by ceating a virtual switch in Hyper-V manager.

  1. Select Virtual Switch Manager in the Actions pane.



  2. Select which type of network would you like to create

    External

    Internal

    Private



  3. Name the Virtual Switch and specify which physical network connection to attach to it.



  4. You can create multiple virtual switches, with each connected to a different network adapter, the use this to attach different network adapter, the use this to attach different VMsto different networks, or to connect one VM to multiple networks.
  5. After Clicking OK you will be notified that you may lose network connectivity for a moment while the netwrok configuration is changed.


Creating a VM

Now that we've created the virtual switch, we can create a VM.

  1. From teh Actions pane, Select New > Virtual Machine



  2. Click Next to continue



  3. Name the VM, choose where to store it, and then click Next.

    Note: From here on, you can click the Finish button to automatically create the VM with the default defined in Hyper-V.



  4. Define the amount of memory you want to allocate to the VM, and then click Next.

    Note:
    Be sure to allocate enough memory to ensure acceptable performance, while still leaving enough RAM for the host computer and any other VMs.



  5. Select the Virtual switch you want to connect the VM to, and then click Next.


  6. Create or attach a virtual hard disk for use by the VM

    You can:

    1. Change the virtual disk size or the location where the VHDX will be stored.

    2. Browser to an existing VHD or VHDX

    3. Skip this step entirely and attach the virtual disk later.



  7. Choose a method for installing an operating system in the VM, and then click Next.



  8. Review the summary of the settings, and then click Finish.


Modifying a VM

  • Select settings from the Action pane
    You can:
  • Change the BIOS boot order
  • Modify the amount of RAM or number of virtual CPUs
  • Add additional hardware like storage controllers, network adaptors, virtual hard disks and DVD drives.
  • Attach physical DVD/CDs, ISO DVD images, or virtual floppy disks.
  • Change the behaviour when the host computer is started or shut down



Start a VM:

  • Access the VM through the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection sfotware, launched from the Start Screen or by opening the VM from the Hyper-V Manager.


  • If you open the Virtual Machine Connection Software from the Start Screen, you will see an option to connect to a remote Hyper-V host and a list of all the VMs running on that host.

    Note: You will need to run this software as an Administrator if you open it from the Start Screen.


  • Many of the options that were exposed in the settings for the VM are also shown in the Menu bar for the Virtual Machine Connection Software.
  • You can:

    1. Take Screenshots.

    2. Change the DVD that is mounted to the VM.

    3. Restart or suspend the VM.


  • Important instinction between VMs running in Hyper-V and VMs running in Virtual PC or any other client virtualization software:

    1. In Virtual PC, VMs run on the user s desktop and within their user account - signing out of that user account would stop and close the VM

    2. With Hyper-V, VMs run as part of the Hyper-V service, not within the context of any particular user account

    3. Closing the Virtual Machine Connection software does not close, suspend, or shut down the VM - it continues to run in the background

    4. Signing out of Windows 8 while a VM is running will allow the VM to continue running in the background


Snap Shots:

  • Snapshots provide a way to capture the exact state of a particular VM as it existed at one specific point in time
  • Select Action > Snapshot from the menu bar


  • You can take multiple snapshots of the same VM
  • All snapshots are displayed in the Snapshots section of the Hyper-V Manager


  • To apply a snapshot, right-click it, and then click Apply
  • To revert back the previously taken snapshot, click Revert

    1. Any configuration changes you make to a particular snapshot will only apply to that snapshot

    2. You can select a snapshot and use the settings for the VM to change things like the hardware configuration or startup behavior, and those changes will only apply to the specific snapshot you have modified
  • This makes Hyper-V a very useful tool for recreating and reproducing customer issues

  • Enable Hyper-V.

    If you are unable to enable Hyper-V,user MSINFO32 to determine why.
  • Create a new virtual switch and VM using an OS ISO or DVD.
